Guiyang has a long history. From Spring and Autumn and Warring States period to the Qin and Han dynastyit was an area of significant importance in ancient Yelang Zangke State. In the first year of Jianxing Reign in the Western Jin Dynasty (AD 313), Zangke Prefecture set in Han Dynasty was divided andYelang Prefecture was established. In the eighth year of Xianhe Reign in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 333),Jinle County was established in the northwest of Zangke Prefecture, which turned into the present area ofGuiyang municipality. It has been over 1600 years so far. In the Tang Dynasty, Juzhou Prefecture was set up and in the first year of Xuanhe Reign in the Song Dynasty (AD1119), it was renamed Guizhou. Since then, “Guizhou” became the name of this administrative region. As Guiyang was abundant in bamboo in ancient time which was called “Hei Yang Jing” (meaning bamboo) by the ethnic minorities there and “zhu” (meaning bamboo in Chinese) became the administrative abbreviation for Guiyang.

In the eleventh year of Yongle Reign in the Ming Dynasty (AD.1413), provincial government was set up in Guizhou with Guizhou City as the administrative center. In the second year of Longqing Reign in Ming Dynasty (AD 1568), government office of Chengfan city (now Huishui County) was moved to Guizhou City. In the next year, since Guiyang was located in the south of Guishan Mountain(In ancient China, the north of a mountain was called yin”,and the south yang.), its name changed from Chengfan city to Guiyang city according to the administrative practice, hence the name of Guiyang. After that the city of Guiyang has always been the political center of Guizhou province. During the Republic of China Period, Guizhou was set as the capital city of Guizhou Province. In the Anti-Japanese War period, Guiyang was an important city in the rear area and the transportation hub in southwest China. In the 30th year of the Republic of China,Guiyang was set up as a city. Later on, People's Republic of China continued to designate Guiyang as the capital city of Guizhou Province. In 1987, approved by the Guiyang Municipal People's Government, camphor and bamboo were made the trees of the city, crape myrtle and orchid the flowers of the city.
